We asked Canadians who’d been to a wedding that didn’t make it past five years: when did you actually know? The answers were quieter — and more specific — than we expected.
“She flinched when he touched her shoulder during the first dance,” one Calgary guest told us. “I was the only person on that side of the room who saw it. I think she saw me see it.”
“The best man’s speech was an apology,” another wrote. “Twenty-two minutes of him apologising on behalf of his brother. The bride’s face never moved. We knew.”

A Halifax reader described the moment the bride’s mother, asked to give a toast, said only: “well, she chose him.” And sat back down.
Several mentioned the cake — specifically, watching one partner take an enormous bite and the other refuse to laugh. The cake moment is, for some reason, statistically over-represented in our inbox.

None of these are proof of anything on their own. The unsettling pattern is how often the guest who noticed turned out to be right.
