Markers are interest-free credit lines extended to high-stakes regulars. They’re settled at the end of a trip — or, in disputed cases, ignored long enough that the casino has to sue.

What makes Meyer interesting isn’t the size of the debt. It’s the helicopter, the comp tier, and the years of access. The discovery process in this case is producing exactly the kind of internal comp-tier documentation that the Vegas and tribal-casino industries have spent decades keeping out of court.

The legal question is narrow: did Meyer sign valid markers, did the casino follow its own credit-issuance procedures, and is the debt enforceable? Meyer’s defence — at least as filed — leans heavily on the second point.

The cultural question is larger: at what comp tier does a casino transition from ‘entertainment venue’ to ‘extending six-figure unsecured credit on the assumption that the customer’s reputation is collateral’? The Meyer case may produce a partial answer in open court.

Canadian players see almost none of this. Provincial casinos do not extend credit. The closest analogue in Canada is the high-roller VIP rooms at major Ontario and BC casinos, which use pre-funded play and entirely different responsible-gambling protocols.
