How a Job at OpenAI Became a $30 Million Lottery Ticket
More than 600 employees cashed out $6.6 billion in a single tender offer. About 75 of them walked away with the full $30M cap.
Part of: AI Reckoning

Working at a hot startup used to mean stock options, four years of vesting, and a 90% chance the paper was worthless. OpenAI just rewrote that math for an entire generation of engineers.
The mechanism is a ‘tender offer’ — a structured liquidity event where the company arranges for outside investors to buy shares directly from employees, at a valuation set by the most recent funding round.
OpenAI is now valued at roughly $500 billion in private markets. A senior engineer who joined in 2021 with even a modest equity grant is, on paper, comfortably into eight figures. The tender offer made that paper real.

What makes this unusual isn’t the size of the payouts — Facebook, Stripe, and SpaceX all ran tender offers in the 2010s. It’s that OpenAI ran one for a workforce that, in 2021, was less than 200 people. The per-head dilution math is brutal in either direction depending on when you joined.
The downstream effect is already visible in the Bay Area housing market and in the donor lists of every AI safety nonprofit. It is also visible in OpenAI’s retention numbers, which have shifted from ‘nobody leaves’ to ‘the people who can afford to leave, do.’

For comparison: Google’s 2004 IPO created an estimated 900 millionaires. OpenAI’s 2025 tender created an estimated 75 people who walked away with $30M each, plus several hundred more in the $1M–$10M range — without the company going public at all.
The contrast with the Oracle, Meta, and Salesforce layoff stories of the same season is the real story of the 2026 AI boom. The same technology is producing both the largest individual paydays in tech history and the most efficient white-collar displacement event of the decade.
