Three of a Kind in Poker — Trips vs. Set, and What It Beats

Three of a kind is three cards of matching rank — three nines, three jacks, three deuces. The other two cards in your five-card hand are kickers and don't need to relate to the trips or each other. In a made hand like 9♠ 9♥ 9♦ K♣ 4♦, the kickers are the king and the four.

Because there are only four cards of each rank in a deck, three of a kind can never become four of a kind on your side alone — someone else has to fold the case card, or it never comes.

Yes, and this trips up more beginners than any other ranking. Two pair looks like a bigger hand — it uses four of your cards instead of three — but it ranks below three of a kind. Any three of a kind, even three deuces, beats any two pair, including aces-and-kings.

The math is why: two pair happens roughly once every 21 hands. Three of a kind happens about once every 47. Rarer hands rank higher.

"Trips" and "set" both describe three of a kind, but experienced players use them differently in community-card games like Texas Hold'em.

A set is when you have a pocket pair (say, 8-8) and a third eight hits the board. Your hand is fully concealed — opponents can't see two of your three eights, so they often can't put you on it.

Trips is when the board pairs (say, an eight comes on the flop and again on the turn) and you hold the case card in your hand. Your hand is much more visible because two of your three cards are face-up on the felt.

Both hands are the same rank on paper. Sets pay off much more often, which is why "set mining" (calling a small pre-flop raise with a low pocket pair, hoping to flop a set) is a standard beginner strategy.

In community-card games where two players could theoretically make the same trips, the higher-ranked kicker plays first, then the second kicker. Suits do not break ties. Split pots are common when the board plays two kickers.
