    Soccer betting glossary

    Every term, in plain English.

Sportsbooks use jargon to make casual bettors feel inside. Here's what it actually means — and which terms actually predict whether you have an edge over the long run.

    Moneyline
Pick the outright winner. In soccer the third option is a draw. Listed as e.g. Canada +280 / Draw +220 / Belgium -110.
Example: Canada +280 means a $10 bet returns $38 if Canada wins.
    Spread (Asian Handicap)
A goal handicap added to one side to balance the matchup. -1.5 means that team must win by 2+ goals.
    Total (Over/Under)
Total goals scored by both teams. Common World Cup totals sit at 2.5.
Example: Over 2.5 cashes if the match ends 2-1, 3-0, etc.
    Both Teams To Score (BTTS)
Yes/No on whether both teams find the net in regulation.
    Draw No Bet (DNB)
Pick a winner; if the match draws, your stake is refunded. Lower payout, less risk.
    Double Chance
Cover two of the three outcomes (Win/Draw, Win/Loss, Draw/Loss). Lower odds, higher hit rate.
    Outright / Tournament Winner
Bet placed before or during the tournament on the eventual champion.
    Top Goalscorer
Bet on the player who finishes the tournament with the most goals — the Golden Boot.
    Group Winner
Pick which team finishes top of a group. Typically priced 30-50% shorter than outright.
    Stage of Elimination
Bet on the round a specific team will be knocked out.
    Live / In-Play
Odds that update during the match. Volatile after goals, red cards, and around halftime.
    Cash Out
Bookmaker offer to settle a bet early at a calculated price. Usually unfavourable long-term.
    Implied probability
Convert decimal odds to a percentage: 1 / decimal odds. Used to spot value vs your own estimate.
    Example: Decimal 2.50 → 1 / 2.50 = 40% implied.
    Vig / Juice
The bookmaker's built-in margin. Sum of implied probabilities across all outcomes exceeds 100% — that overage is the vig.
    Closing Line Value (CLV)
Difference between the price you took and the price at kick-off. Beating the closing line consistently is the only proven sign of edge.
    xG (Expected Goals)
Statistical model estimating the quality of chances created. Useful sanity check on raw scorelines.
